Commemorating 10 years of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to describe the milestone as a major turning point in India’s digital payments journey.

Highlighting the scale and reach of UPI, Modi said the platform’s growth was something every Indian could be proud of. He also invited citizens to share their experiences and explain how UPI has impacted their lives.

“A decade ago, UPI was rolled out, marking a major turning point in India’s digital payments journey. The sheer scale and reach of UPI are something every Indian must be proud of. Tell me about your UPI experience and how it impacted your life,” Prime Minister Modi said.

Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has emerged as a cornerstone of India’s digital payments revolution. Over the past decade, it has become an integral part of everyday life, enabling people across economic and social groups to transfer money instantly from one bank account to another using mobile devices.

UPI is currently accepted in 11 countries, with Greece and the Maldives being the latest countries to adopt India’s real-time payment platform. NPCI International Payments Limited also partnered with ACLEDA Bank Plc. in June 2026 to launch UPI acceptance in Cambodia, further strengthening India’s cross-border digital payment connectivity.

The 10-year milestone highlights the rapid expansion of digital payments across India, with UPI becoming an important part of everyday transactions, from small purchases and bill payments to larger financial transactions.
