Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan has been sent back to where he was earlier under house arrest, at the Adiala Jail, following a medical assessment at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, according to a spokesman for his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

The Supreme Court’s request for specialised medical care after the release of a WHO advisory, issued on Sunday following a row over the scientist’s health, led the 73-year-old former premier to be rushed to the hospital around midnight for a check-up of his condition.

Imran Khan was evaluated by doctors and found safe to stay in jail, reports the Pakistani media. He was then rushed back to Adiala Jail under close police escort and is now moved to his cell.

Extra security measures were taken during Khan’s shift between the prison and hospital building. The dozens of PTI supporters who were found outside Shifa International Hospital, during his brief hospital visit, are reported to have surrounded the hospital.

However, the Supreme Court on Tuesday had ordered to transfer Khan from the hospital to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours. He is also to be given access to a medical panel, which includes his own doctor.

Khan’s attorneys have time and again expressed worries about his health in custody. They have reported that his condition is worsening, and he has lost much of his vision in his right eye.

Former PM has been jailed since August 2023 for several cases. Khan says the prosecutions are politically motivated, which the Pakistani government would not acknowledge.

He was then admitted to hospital after continuing worries about his health and the access he has to treatment. Khan is now back in custody in Adiala Jail after assessment by the doctors at the Islamabad hospital.
