The Lok Sabha passed three Bills through voice vote on Tuesday while top-sloganeering by Opposition MPs such as the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, which calls for changing the name of the state from Kerala to Keralam, was heard.
The Bill was introduced in Lok Sabha by the Union Minister for State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai while the Opposition members were demanding the presence of the Home Minister Amit Shah and a statement on police actions against the NEET protesters on July 20.
The protests persisted in the absence of any sign of a functioning House, despite several request from the House’s Chair for it to get back on track. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the Opposition for not participating in the discussion on the name-change proposal. The Bill in that form was passed third time by a voice vote, but without a debate.
Tribunal Reforms Bill Passed
The Tribunal Reforms Bill, 2026 also contains a host of changes to the country’s tribunal system. The law will also create a National Tribunals Commission, which will be responsible for the appointment of chairpersons and membership of several tribunals and oversee their operations.
The proposed mechanism will deals with 14 key tribunals, such as in the fields of environment, armed forces, telecommunications, company law, income tax, consumer matters and administrative aspects.
Tribunals have a judicial function and deals with a specific area of dispute.
NCDC Amendment Bill Gets Nod
Again, under the Opposition chorus, the Lok Sabha has also passed a bang-on-the-face Bill for the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment), 2026 by voice vote.
It was introduced by the Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol in the presence of the Minister for Cooperation, Amit Shah.
The aim of the Bill is to make the fundings for cooperative societies quicker and easier and to amend the National Co-operative Development Corporation Act, 1962 in this regard.
It also recommends increasing the role played by the NCDC, a statute body under the Ministry of Cooperation, in the financial and promotion of the cooperative societies in the country.
The passage of the three Bills is another noteworthy piece of legislation in Lok Sabha amidst the ongoing chaos, though the movement from Kerala’s name was passed without discussion.
