Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday conveyed his greetings on the occasion of National Handloom Day to celebrate the glorious legacy of handlooms, and the generations of handloom weavers and artisans who have safeguarded the traditional art of the country.

The Prime Minister in a tweet says that weavers represent a skillful, creative, hardworking and agroup that is a crucial component of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, women-led development and rural empowerment. He reiterated the government’s commitment in supporting the sector, and building capacity of the livelihood of the artisan families.

Modi also urged people to buy handloom products and spread “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) videos of their handloom custom on the social media platform with hashtag – #NationalHandloomDay. Every such message will support traditional weave industry in India and will celebrate and respect the talented artisans of the country, he added.

The Prime Minister’s call for celebrating the handloom day with the same enthusiasm as the friendship day was issued on the same day on which he had earlier posted a special Instagram reel asking people to celebrate National Handloom Day with the same fervor as Friendship Day. In the same video, he mentioned that the historic date of ‘7 August 1905’ – the inception of ‘Swadeshi Movement’ against British rule gave birth to the concept of ‘Self-reliant India’.

Modi emphasized that the promotion of handlooms is not only a way of protecting the rich tradition of Indian textiles but also a means of ensuring sustainable livelihoods for millions of weaver families. He advised the people of the country to promote handloom as a way of life and help build Self-reliant India with the traditional segment of the Textile industry.
