Former cricketers, experts and the cricket fraternity has welcomed Auqib Nabi’s maiden call-up for India to run with great enthusiasm, with many citing the perspective that it is a rare opportunity for the Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler which he deserves so much.
The 27-year-old was named as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement for India’s upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka after the premier pacer was ruled out due to a left knee injury.
Auqib Nabi has consistently delivered impressive performance in domestic cricket over the last couple of seasons giving him a strong argument for selection for the country. He has taken 104 wickets in the two Ranji Trophy editions he has played in, with a fantastic 60 wickets in the 2025-26 season alone.
His displays were instrumental in Jammu Kashmir winning their maiden Ranji Trophies and he emerged as a steady patterer domestically.
The right-arm pacer also showcased his abilities during the recent India A tour of Sri Lanka, where he picked up six wickets in two first-class matches, further strengthening his credentials ahead of the senior team’s tour.
After the announcement, many former players and experts in the game welcomed the selection, calling Nabi’s name a reflection of his perseverance and efforts.
Bumrah’s absence has made way for Nabi to make his debut in Test cricket and make an impact in international cricket. His inclusion also highlights India’s keenness to recognise good home form and bolster its pace set up for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle.
