Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to deliver her first public address on media in two years since she left Dhaka following the collapse of her government on Wednesday in New Delhi.
The virtual press conference will see Hasina, who has not been able to return to Bangladesh since she was forced into exile on August 5, 2024, announce her vision for the future of Bangladesh. It’s going to be taking place at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club in New Delhi.
The organisers say Awami League leader Dr.M Shah drogas, aged 78, will give her plan on how to return to her base after two years. Her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy will also be delivering a speech at the event, alongside Awami League leaders, former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel and former Bangladesh cricketer-turned-politician Shakib Al Hasan.
Her bringing up of the case is politically questionable as the Government of the country (Bangladesh) headed by the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) has been pushing for her extradition from India. Her carefully handled announcement will further complicate political relations between Awami League government and ruling BNP.
The former prime minister fled the country after her government faced widespread student-led protests which ended the Awami League’s four-decade-long tenure. She has been in India since then, as her party has been issuing challenge statements to the current administration from aboard India.
The upcoming speech will be keenly monitoring, both in Bangladesh and the global sphere, for any hints of her political trajectory and potential return, as the signs of her status could offer insights into her political future.
