U.S. President Donald Trump said that the United States and Israel had agreed to hold off on planned strikes on Iran at the request of Tehran and other countries in the region — provided a deal is quickly reached.
“The USA is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II,” Mr. Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
“Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack,” he said.
“Based on this request, I have agreed… to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL. The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment.”
The statements come against the recent telephonic conversation between the western leader and the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed Bin Salman who raised concerns about the U.S. potentially escalating the conflict with Iran, according to a person familiar with the leaders’ discussion.
The de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia expressed concerns over U.S. targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure or carring out massive strikes on other key infrastructure that Tehran could have a retaliatory attack on the kingdom and other Gulf countries’ energy infrastructure.
His post further mentioned that the fresh deal “would include the immediate, complete, and total opening of the Hormuz Strait, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.”
“We have just been asked by Iran and other Middle Eastern Countries to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to. This would include the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat,”
Meanwhile, Iran’s leadership is presenting a united front as it intensifies its response to US and allied attacks, but deep divisions remain over the ultimate goal of the conflict. As per sources, hardline factions within Iran’s ruling establishment are pushing for a complete victory and rejecting negotiations with Washington, while allies of president Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf view military pressure as a means to secure a stronger negotiated settlement. The divide reflects broader disagreements in Tehran over whether the war should be pursued through continued confrontation or used as leverage to reach a political agreement with the United States.
Reports claim 600 US military personnel have been killed in the war with Iran, alleging that Washington is hiding the true toll from the American public.
