US President Donald Trump on Wednesday accused Tehran for violating the ceasefire by targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Launching a fresh attack on Iran, the US president said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran was over. Trump also indicated that the already fragile ceasefire between the two countries had effectively collapsed following renewed tensions in the Gulf.
Speaking at the opening session of the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump alleged that Iran had breached the ceasefire by targeting commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.
The US President also delivered a strong criticism of Iran’s leadership, accusing them of failing to honour commitments made under the agreement. “I think it’s over,” Trump said when asked about the future of the understanding with Tehran.
He further alleged that the Iranian leadership had acted in bad faith and described them as “liars”, “cheats” and “sick people”. Trump also indicated that he no longer wished to engage with Iran following the latest developments.
Trump’s remarks come amid renewed military tensions in the Gulf, where both sides have exchanged accusations over actions that they claim violated the ceasefire framework.
The latest statement raises fresh uncertainty over diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran, with the future of any potential negotiations now appearing increasingly uncertain.
