Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has decided that the state government will procure only air-conditioned buses in the future. The decision has been taken to make public transport more comfortable and expanding quality connectivity across the state.
The announcement was conveyed by Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a ruling TVK event in Salem.
According to the Transport Minister, the Chief Minister wants people across Tamil Nadu to travel comfortably in air-conditioned buses and has directed that future bus procurements should focus on AC vehicles. Parthiban said Vijay also wants every remote region of the state to be connected through an efficient public transport network. He added that the Chief Minister believes all buses should offer the necessary facilities to ensure a comfortable journey for every passenger.
The announcement comes days after Vijay flagged off a fleet of 300 new government buses across Tamil Nadu.
During the event, the Chief Minister interacted with a bus conductor and inspected the newly inducted vehicles.
The new fleet, procured at a cost of Rs 127.21 crore, includes 164 diesel buses and 136 BS-VI-compliant CNG buses. The buses have been deployed from major transport hubs, including Koyambedu and Kilambakkam, to improve connectivity and reduce waiting time for commuters.
The bus induction programme was attended by senior ministers and officials from the Transport Department.
The government’s latest decision to procure only AC buses aligns with its broader objective of modernising Tamil Nadu’s public transport system while improving passenger comfort and connectivity across the state.
