Oscar nominated ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ a docudrama of a 5 year old Palestinian girl clears Central Board of Film Certification assessment receiving a certificate that paves its way to Indian theaters on June 19 uncut. The theatrical release of the film was blocked in the country owning to fears that it will ‘break up’ diplomatic ties between the nation at strike Israel and India as the film had sensitive scenes.
The decision faced criticism from film makers, artists and free speech advocates who argued that the move amounted to political censorship. The controversy intensified when more than 90 members of the film fraternity and civil society signed an open letter condemning the reported refusal to certify the film. They urged authorities to allow audiences to view the documentary and make their own judgements.
The clearance comes nearly three months following a backlash. In March, according to person from the industry, the members of the film examining committee had expressed concerns as the film would impact the diplomatic ties between Israel and India. The clearance now stems from an approval from a revising committee under the Cinematograph Rules for a fresh review.
The film helmed by a Tunisian film maker Kaouther Ben Hania depicts how a 5-year-old Palestinian girl was killed during the time of conflict in Gaza. It incorporates recordings of Rajab’s distress calls to emergency responders and depicts the human impact of the conflict. The Film has drawn international attention for its portrayal of human cost of war and was nominated in various major international awards
