Retired Judge Giribala Singh and his son Samarth Singh were remanded in custody on Tuesday after a tense hearing in a court of law, as part of the investigation into Twisha Sharma’s death.

The mother-son duo was born before a Bhopal court after their five-day custodial remand during the investigation being conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation. During the proceedings, Giribala Singh stated that both her and her son were under threats to their lives and were being subjected to intense public and media scrutiny. She asked for steps to be taken to prevent the “media trial” from taking place, saying that they were being pursued, and were being tried before the end of the legal proceedings.

The case is related to the death of Twisha Sharma, who was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12 and is in her thirties. It was thought at the time that she died by suicide, but soon after it was suggested she had been the target of dowry harassment and domestic abuse, leading to the investigation of her husband and mother-in-law.

The drama in the court did not end there as Giribala Singh had also claimed that Twisha’s lawyer Anurag Srivastava had physically assaulted Samarth Singh during a hearing in Jabalpur. The allegation came to light during a court hearing on the progress of the pending investigation.

The case has garnered considerable public attention and several comments of Giribala Singh regarding her late daughter-in-law have been criticized by the family of Twisha and her supporters. Further investigations into Twisha’s death are still underway and the accused are still in judicial custody awaiting further inquiry.
