The annual meeting of the International Cricket Council in Ahmedabad is now in the news as Mohsin Naqvi, the ICC Chairman, will attend virtually instead of in-person. The event is being held in tandem with the final weekend of the IPL and will see some of world cricket’s most prominent personalities meet to discuss important administrative and governance issues.
The Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, is also the interior minister of Pakistan and is expected to participate in the talks via video-conference. This is in accordance with ICC regulations, which provide for the participation of the member representatives in a remote manner if travelling is not possible. The report says that Naqvi was never expected to make the trip to India and his virtual presence was planned from the beginning.
The meeting had been set in Doha, but was postponed because of the instability and security issues in West Asia. The venue change to Ahmedabad, where the IPL final is going to play, is adding a special significance to the event and making it more popular worldwide.
Now Naqvi is coming on board, cricketing relations between India and Pakistan remain under the spotlight. He has been closely followed for his involvement in ICC issues, as one of the major protagonists in the recent PCB-Asian Cricket Council discussion. The political and sporting context is contributing to a layer of intrigue that has been added onto one of the biggest administrative gatherings of the cricket season.
