The Israeli Army revealed on Thursday that one soldier was killed in an explosive drone attack carried out by Hezbollah close to the Lebanon border a day before. This pushes the tally of Israeli soldiers killed in the current confrontation with the Iran-backed militant outfit to 24. As stated in the army statement, the dead soldier is named Sgt. Rotem Yanai, aged 20 years, who hailed from Giv’at Ada. Rotem Yanai reportedly served as a service conditions non-commissioned officer at the Givati Brigade’s Rotem Battalion and died “during operational activity in northern Israel.”
The IDF disclosed to Agence France Presse that Rotem Yanai succumbed to wounds sustained during the Hezbollah attack through a loitering munition fired from Lebanon against a military zone near the border. Preliminary investigation suggests that she was heading towards a safe haven when the explosion occurred close-by.
The IDF stated that a reservist sustained serious injuries while another one suffered from moderate injuries. According to local news sources, the injured soldiers belonged to a special rapid response force that rushed to the site to help after a fire was started by the initial drone attack but ended up getting hit by another drone filled with explosives.
While drone alert sirens went off in various parts of the country’s north, the army noted that they failed to intercept the drones that flew over the border. This latest drone strike can be seen as a major escalatory step in the Israel-Lebanon border region, which has experienced growing violence between both sides even though efforts have been made to broker a peaceful resolution. As Hezbollah launches more drone attacks, Israeli politicians and the military have hinted at the possibility of increased aerial operations, as well as mass evacuation warnings for civilians living further south into Lebanon.
