Online fraud has come to a shocking light in the Basantpur police station area, in the arrest of two women and one man, compelling a young man to surrender Rs 3 lakh while manipulating him through the online mediums of Instagram.

Police sources said that in April 2024, the complainant’s daughter approached the Basantpur police station and filed a complaint saying that she came to know of accused Monu Kumar Chirawatkar, Kavita, and Sonal through Instagram. Once they made contact via social media, the accused allegedly started contacting the victim via phone calls and messages.

In their interactions, the offenders reportedly confessed to being afflicted by serious ailments such as blood cancer, migraine, and other medical ailments. They also said that they were targeted by their relatives. Using these emotional stories, the accused repeatedly sought financial help from the complainant.

The accused wanted money for some reasons like treatment expenses, ration expenses, and financial assistance to his mother and sister, police said. The victim believed them to be true and transferred almost Rs 3 lakh in various tranches over a span of time online.

However, the victim later spotted that he had been cheated. However, when he insisted on the repayment of his money, the accused threatened him with being involved in a fake case.

Based on the complaint, Basantpur police had opened a case against the accused under Sections 318(4), 308, 351(2), and 3(5) of the IPC. The police have then considered the issue and caught all three accused. A further investigation into the case is ongoing.
