Washington: A major relief for highly skilled workers particularly the Indian diaspora in the US following Trumps new Green Card policy. Tweaking the policy, spokesperson for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Zach Kahler, said applicants who serves the national interest or provides economic value to the US may still be allowed to continue like earlier.
“People who present applications that provide an economic benefit or otherwise are in the national interest will likely be able to continue on their current path, while others may be asked to apply abroad depending on individualized circumstances,” Kahler said.
The clarification follows a marked change in Immigration policy where applicants are now required to travel back to home country and complete the green card process prior to their return. The move represents a significant departure from a long-standing system that allowed many foreign nationals to remain in the US while applying through an Adjustment of Status process.
The new proposal is however recieving a lot of backlash from industry experts, investors and MNC owners stating it would siginifcantly impact the economy. However, defending the proposal, US Department of Homeland Security said the policy was designed to restore the immigration system’s intended structure and close what it described as loopholes.
The new USCIS guidance reportedly instructs officers to apply stricter discretion while reviewing applications filed inside the United States. However, experts claim the new policy might face judicial challenges, with questions remaining over implementation and timelines.
For now, officials say applicants tied to economic priorities or national interests may continue to receive favorable consideration while broader changes are still being worked out.
