Washington: White House officials confirmed a 21year old suspect who opened fire near the complex was shot ‌by officers and died after being taken to the ‌hospital on Saturday evening.

According to statement by the Secret Service, the man approached at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House, pulled out a gun from his bag and started shooting at officers on duty. Reportedly the officers returned fire and shot the suspect.

A bystander was injured; however, another Secret Service statement, cited by multiple sources, said it was not clear whether the bystander was hit ‌when the gunman began shooting or during the subsequent exchange of gunfire.

The shooting triggered a brief lockdown of the White House, which has since been lifted. President Donald Trump was inside at the time, and officials said no individuals were impacted.

A law enforcement official interacting with the media reporters identified the shooter as an emotionally disturbed person, against whom a ‘stay away order’ was issued previously. He, in July 2025 is said to have a ‘run-in’ where he tried to gain entry to the White House, and he was sent to a psychiatric ward for mental health issues in the aftermath.

Security was beefed up around the White House and further investigation is underway.
