U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a high-level visit to India on Saturday. This important four-day visit aims to strengthen strategic ties between the two nations, improve defense cooperation within the Indo-Pacific region through the Quad grouping, and open up more opportunities in the areas of trade and energy security.
His plane landed at Kolkata Airport, marking his first-ever visit to India since he was appointed. It carries significant symbolism, as it marks the end of a 14-year gap since a U.S. Secretary of State last made a stopover in the eastern city.
Rubio then went to visit the famous Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa. The US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, personally welcomed the high-level American official at the airport. “Honored to welcome my friend @SecretaryofState to India,” the U.S. Ambassador tweeted on social media X. “[It’s time to push] ahead with an ambitious agenda, starting with the Quad Foreign Ministers meeting to realize the [President’s] vision for an even stronger US-India relationship. Looking forward to great conversations!”
Rubio’s subsequent engagements include traveling to New Delhi to participate in significant discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussion will focus on strengthening energy cooperation between the two countries. Commenting to the press before his visit to India, Rubio emphasized the economic intent behind the trip, saying, “We want to sell them as much energy as they’ll buy… We want to be a bigger part of their portfolio.” His trip concludes in New Delhi on Tuesday, where he will participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting along with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the Japanese and Australian foreign ministers.
