NEW DELHI – Much of the north, central, and western parts of India remain under the grip of a relentless heatwave, with temperatures rising above the mark of 40 degrees celcius for a number of places in several Indian states. However, while some of the national capital experienced brief respite due to occasional rains early Saturday morning, forecasters predict this will not last for long.
The IMD continues its forecast of a severe heatwave warning for Delhi till May 28 and predicts a rise in the temperature. Weather officials have said that since the city remains under the influence of dry and hot northwesterly winds, the mercury will continue to remain very high. The scenario is even grimmer for the neighboring regions. A severe heatwave has been experienced in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha region as the maximum temperature recorded was 47.6 degrees celcius. Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Orissa, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh face peak summer discomfort.
Making the matter worse, the IMD has pointed out that there is an increased presence of “warm nights” wherein the minimum temperatures at night are nearly $5^\circ \text{C}$ higher than usual. This makes it impossible for humans to recuperate from the effects of the daytime heat. The probability of a person suffering from heat stroke increases significantly because of this problem. In response to this situation, the local government is setting up relief centers with air coolers, water supply, and ORS. People have been advised to refrain from venturing outdoors between noon and 4:00 PM.
