Latur: In a major development in the NEET UG 2026 paper leak case, the CBI on Thursday detained the first parent involved in the alleged malpractice. Doctor Manoj Shirure is said to have allegedly purchased the leaked NEET question paper for his daughter, who appeared for the competitive exam this year. Additionally, the son of Motegaonkar, the RCC director, was also detained for questioning.

According to sources, the doctor was questioned on Tuesday and was later served a notice to appear before the CBI. Investigation reveals he is believed to have links with individuals already under the scanner in the case. The agency is probing whether leaked papers and answer keys were circulated among selected candidates through a larger organised network operating from Latur, Nanded, Nagpur and Pune. Digital devices, documents and communication records are also being examined.

Meanwhile, Motegaonkar’s son was also questioned in Pune. Investigators suspect that the paper was purchased for personal benefits, as he also appeared for the exam this year.

The arrest has sparked protests across the country demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Earlier on Wednesday, CBI shut down RCC coaching centre, touting arrest of its director Shivraj Motegaonkar as the probe deepened. Following its takeover from the state police, the CBI has begun a nationwide probe and detained suspects. Coaching institutions, middlemen, and a few parents who allegedly gained benefits from the malpractice have been detained.
