During its visit to Tamil Nadu, the outfit of the official function of Rajendra Arlekar has been trimmed back in the wake of fuel conservation appeals made by the Prime Minister who called on the people of the state on global concerns about energy conservation, which have been linked to the ongoing situation in West Asia.

The governor told officers that they can reduce the security cordon for his movement in the state on Saturday from the current 10 vehicles of police to just four, sources at Raj Bhavan said. The move is being interpreted as a symbolic move on the larger issue of saving fuel and moving away from fossil fuels, which is being championed by the Centre.

Recently, Prime Minister Modi had asked people to take various measures, including cutting down on the use of petrol and diesel, using electric vehicles, opting for more public transport like Metro rail services, car pooling wherever possible. He also recommended increasing the use of home offices and rail transport of goods.

Governor Arlekar’s step is just in time, after administering the oath to Karenasethu Vivegam of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to the Tamil Government on May 10 before leaving for Kerala. He may also officiate over other swearing-in ceremonies of the newly elected TVK legislators during his commendable visit, according to sources.

The smaller convoy has welcomed attention as political leaders in the country have started taking the call for energy conservation and cost-efficient measures.
