New Delhi: In an important step towards saving fuel and boosting economic stability, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made a significant announcement on Thursday that all government officials of the state will be compelled to work from home for two days every week. This has been taken as part of a larger austerity program being undertaken to cut down on the carbon emissions of Delhi and to conserve fuel amid growing tensions in the Middle East region.
Response to the Nation First Appeal by the Prime Minister
This new step comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity, “Nation First”. With rising tensions between Iran and Israel in the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for oil trade worldwide, India faces a great threat with regard to its fuel imports and foreign currency holdings. “Such steps need to be taken to alleviate the pressure on our foreign currency resources,” said the Chief Minister at a press conference held at the Delhi Secretariat.
Key Measures Introduced
Beyond the mandatory WFH for government offices, the Delhi administration has outlined several key shifts in operations:
- Virtual Meetings: At least 50% of all official government meetings must now be conducted via online platforms to eliminate unnecessary travel.
- Reduced Vehicle Use: The Chief Minister has ordered a reduction in the size of ministerial convoys and has encouraged the use of public transport and carpooling for all staff.
- Private Sector Advisory: The labor department will issue an advisory to private companies to implement similar fuel-saving WFH arrangements.
- Foreign Travel Ban: A temporary halt has been placed on non-essential foreign travel for all state government officials.
