The first stage of the evacuation commenced when some passengers onboard the cruise ship MV Hondius began getting off the boat using small boats. This Dutch-flagged ship is currently berthed at the Port of Granadilla in Tenerife after an outbreak of Hantavirus was confirmed onboard the ship, and a quarantine had to be enforced.

The current batch of people who are allowed to disembark the cruise ship consists solely of Spaniards. The passengers dressed in protective attire were transported using small boats to be taken ashore at the industrial port of Granadilla, which is where MV Hondius docked yesterday morning.

These people will not stay on the islands. Instead, a special route will be used by these passengers to take them straight to the hospital in Madrid for medical examination and monitoring.

The reason why there is such worry about the Hantavirus on MV Hondius is the fact that this particular virus is hard to contract by humans. Usually, one gets infected by coming into contact with the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents. However, Hantavirus infection may cause either respiratory complications or hemorrhagic fever in humans.
