New Delhi: India made a big step forward in its strategic missile defense capabilities when the country successfully tested an upgraded Agni-5 missile with MIRV capability on Friday. As stated by the Ministry of Defense on Saturday, this event is considered a big milestone within the “Mission Divyastra” project of the country.
This test involved launching the weapon system with multiple warheads targeted at different targets hundreds of kilometers away from each other.
Precision at Large Scale
As reported by the Ministry of Defense, several warheads were carried by the rocket, targeting spatially separated objects in the Indian Ocean Region. Telemetry and tracking facilities both on land and at sea tracked the whole trajectory from launch to the re-entry vehicle’s impact.
Successful implementation of MIRV technology positions India among an elite few nations like the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom that possess the advanced capability of overcoming enemy defenses. Due to its multi-warhead capability launched from a single platform, the Agni-5 boosts India’s capacity for counter-strike capability.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh complimented DRDO and the Indian Army stating the test will bring “incredible capability” to India’s defense preparedness. With the Agni-5 being a solid-fuelled engine with three stages having a strike range in excess of 5,000 km, it is considered one of the core missiles of India’s nuclear triad. Even though the maiden test of this advanced capability was conducted in March 2024, this recent test indicates the advancement of indigenous technology used in this maneuver.
