The Election Commission of India (ECI) is expected to start the process of counting votes at 8 am today for what could be one of the most crucial polls since the general election. Today would be the day that would determine the political future of five major states—West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry—as well as many important assembly by-elections throughout the country.
Ahead of the counting of votes for the assembly elections in West Bengal and three other states and a Union Territory, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee made a big claim in the wee hours of Monday, saying that “load-shedding is being done in phases, CCTV is being turned off” in some constituencies.
Test of Regional Dominance in Five Major States
In West Bengal, all eyes would be on the battle between Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the rising BJP after a record-high voter turnout of more than 92%. At the same time, the DMK alliance would have its hands full in Tamil Nadu against the AIADMK alliance, while the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF would have a tough fight in Kerala against the anti-incumbent wave of the UDF. The BJP would get a chance to consolidate its foothold in the Northeast through Assam, while Puducherry would witness a close race between the NDA alliance and the INDIA alliance.
Maharashtra: High-profile battles in Baramati and Rahuri following the death of Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and MLA Shivaji Kardile.
Karnataka: Contests in Bagalkot and Davanagere South.
Gujarat, Nagaland, & Tripura: Respective seats in Umreth, Koridang, and Dharmanagar.
It should be noted that on the eve of the by-election in the seat of Ponda, which is located in the state of Goa, the Bombay High Court canceled the election. This decision was made since there is no need for such an election because only one year left from the term of the Assembly.
In addition, when the first results become known today, they will play a key role in understanding the new political situation in India.
