New Delhi: A nationwide Cell Broadcast test alert is scheduled today in an attempt to strengthen the public safety during emergencies. Mobile phones are expected to receive an emergency notification which could be accompanied by loud sound or vibration.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) officials said “NDMA will test Cell Broadcast Alerts on 2 May 2026 in your area. On receiving the message on your mobile phone, no action is required. Please do not panic.” Authorities have stated that these messages are purely for trial to assess the effectiveness of the system and do no not indicate any real emergency. The test will cover Delhi NCR and capital cities of all states excluding border areas and poll bound states.

The exercise is aimed at ensuring timely dissemination of critical information amongst the citizens during actual disasters and improving the preparedness of the communication systems. The authorities also aim to check the compatibility across different mobile networks and devices

Unlike regular messages, these alerts are designed to grab immediate attention. They will override your normal phone settings producing a sharp sound with a message flashing on the display. Ensuring the message be reachable even if your away from the phones, or your devices are on silent or do not disturb mode. The messages will be delivered in Hindi, English and all regional languages. Authorities have urged people not to panic and be respond calmly. They also mentioned that the message today will clearly state it is a ‘test alert’ to avoid confusion.

The system is run by an indigenous platform known as the Integrated Alert System (SACHET), developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). It operates using the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), ensuring compatibility with international standards while addressing unique communication needs. Another key feature of the system is its ability to deliver the alert in multiple Indian languages reaching across the country. This multilingual approach is expected to play a vital role in ensuring the instructions a well understood.

The government of India conducted such tests earlier as well. However, the current phase is planned to be executed on a large scale covering multiple regions simultaneously. the ultimate aim to built a robust, real time alert system that can save lives.
