DRDO is currently actively developing India’s most advanced and long-range ballistic missile, the Agni-6. This will be the next and more powerful version of the Agni-5. This missile will be equipped with MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle) technology, meaning that multiple nuclear warheads can be installed in a single missile, allowing them to engage multiple targets simultaneously. This missile is primarily being developed for strategic deterrence. It will allow India to easily target any part of China and further strengthen the nuclear triad.
Range: 10,000 to 12,000 kilometers, with a lighter payload it can reach 14,000-16,000 km.
Warhead capacity: Approximately 3 tons (3,000 kg) of nuclear or thermonuclear warheads.
MIRV capability: Can carry 10-11 warheads, each with a yield of up to 250 kilotons.
Engine: Multi-stage (three or four stage) solid-fuel rocket.
Weight: 55,000 to 70,000 kg (55-70 tons).
Length: 20 to 40 meters (longer than the Agni-5).
Diameter: Approximately 2 meters.
Launch platform: Road-mobile transporter erector launcher (TEL) and rail-mobile. A submarine-launched variant may also be developed in the future.
Guidance system: Inertial navigation system with ring laser gyroscope, IRNSS (NavIC), and terminal guidance.
Speed: 30,870 km/hr
The Agni-6 will use composite materials, making it lighter and more capable. It will also be based on the technology of the K-5 and K-6 submarine-launched ballistic missiles. DRDO has completed the design of the Agni-6. Prototype manufacturing is now underway. The design is finalized in 2025. However, the decision to fully pursue the project and conduct flight tests rests with the central government.
DRDO chief Dr. Samir Kamat’s statement clearly indicates that DRDO is technically fully prepared and is only awaiting government approval. India currently deploys Agni-5, a missile with a range of 5000+ km, and has successfully conducted MIRV tests. Agni-6 will be the next step.
