India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement: After waiting for many years, the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement has finally been sealed. The historic free trade agreement between India and New Zealand was sealed on Monday, 27 April 2026. The deal was signed in the presence of Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and his New Zealand counterpart Todd McClay. This historic agreement between the two countries will create new employment opportunities. New Zealand will also invest 20 billion dollars in India. While New Zealand will also give working visas to 5000 Indians.
Negotiations for this deal began in 2010. After nine rounds of talks, they were halted in 2015. They were resumed in March 2025. They were then finalized in December last year.
This agreement is a golden opportunity for those involved in IT, education, financial services, construction, and healthcare. Furthermore, it has opened up new avenues for traditional Indian professions like AYUSH, yoga instructors, Indian chefs, and music teachers to showcase their skills abroad. From a business perspective, labor-intensive Indian sectors like textiles, leather, plastics, and engineering will now gain direct duty-free access to the New Zealand market.
Over the next 15 years, approximately $20 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) from New Zealand could flow into India. In turn, New Zealand gains a significant market share in India’s vast consumer market. Over 54% of New Zealand’s products, including wool, coal, wood products, and seafood, are imported from India.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called it a once-in-a-generation agreement. Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal described it as the beginning of a new chapter in India-New Zealand economic relations. Piyush Goyal said that this FTA reflects trust, shared values, and a shared vision of sustainable economic growth. This agreement will also serve as a gateway for India to access Oceania and Pacific Island markets.
