Mumbai: In a move that has sent shockwaves of nostalgia through the film industry, superstar Sanjay Dutt officially announced the sequel to his 1993 cult classic, Khalnayak. Officially titled Khalnayak Returns, this movie would bring a contemporary and edgy version of the legendary villain Ballu, whose character would go down in history as the greatest cinematic antihero of all time.
The trailer of the movie created such a sensation, which instantly became a viral phenomenon among fans. As we see in the trailer, Ballu is captured in the act of walking slowly in prison garb with the menacing aura that made him so popular three decades back. In one of the memorable scenes, Dutt dips his fingers into gasoline and lights a cigar, indicating the violent nature of his character coming back full circle. The entire video is clearly a hint toward a prison break that would make us experience all the adrenaline of the original. However, it turns out that there was a rather unusual story behind the sequel.

Although the original was helmed by the iconic director Subhash Ghai and featured Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit in leading roles, Khalnayak Returns will be a joint effort by Dutt and Three Dimension Motion Pictures along with Aspect Entertainment.
The original filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who has formally transferred the rights for the “new interpretation,” is also enthusiastic about the venture, emphasizing how the idea has been born out of Dutt’s love for the character. Although there have been no official announcements regarding the rest of the cast, it is safe to say that the movie promises a blend of nostalgia and modern-day filmmaking.
