Washington: In a major escalation of American naval presence in the Middle East, the U.S. military has officially deployed the USS George H.W. Bush. The arrival of the Nimitz-class supercarrier marks the third U.S. carrier strike group to enter the region, signaling a massive “maximum pressure” posture even as diplomatic channels remain precariously open.

US military on Thursday confirmed that USS George HW Bush aircraft carrier has arrived in the Middle East, bringing the number of the massive American warships operating in the region to three.

The Bush was sailing “in the Indian Ocean in the US Central Command area of responsibility, April 23,” the military command responsible for the Middle East said in a post on X. The post also had an image of the carrier with its deck packed with warplanes.

This buildup occurs during a fragile ceasefire that has paused direct U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran. The conflict, which escalated sharply in February 2026, has seen intensive aerial campaigns targeting Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure. While major combat is currently on hold, the Pentagon described the deployment as a “necessary deterrent” to ensure Tehran adheres to the terms of the pause and reopens the vital Strait of Hormuz.
