AMRITSAR: Punjab Police has managed to deliver a severe blow to narcotics smuggling internationally by dismantling an elaborate cross-border drugs smuggling gang and seizing 64.62 kg of heroin as well as making two arrests. This successful anti-drugs operation, carried out in a region close to Mahal village in Amritsar, has been declared to be one of the biggest seizures in recent years as part of the Punjab Police’s “Yudh Nashian Virudh” drive against drugs.
Upon receiving actionable intelligence, the State Special Operations Cell and the Counter-Intelligence department were able to make the arrests. The DGP, Gaurav Yadav, announced that Sarwan Singh (aka Gujjar) and Shamsher Singh (aka Shera), who are both residents of Amritsar. Police found a large quantity of heroin with the arrested drug smugglers, who were apparently preparing to distribute the drugs among various areas of Punjab.
Global Links and “Ice” Connections
Preliminary investigations have exposed a complex web of international coordination. According to DGP Yadav, the module was in direct contact with:
- Pakistan-based smugglers: Facilitating the physical transport of narcotics across the border.
- Portugal-based handlers: Managing the logistics and financial transactions of the syndicate from abroad.
Most importantly, the seized heroin was part of the same gang that was previously caught with a record quantity of 532 kg heroin smuggling at the Attari border back in 2019. The current operation shows that the gangs are getting more experienced in smuggling with the help of foreign coordinators.
The most recent development comes after the interception of large amounts of drugs. In just the first quarter of 2026, the BSF and Punjab Police intercepted over 330 kilograms of heroin, which is likely to surpass last year’s record haul of 2,021 kilograms.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed in Amritsar’s SSOC police station. Now, the authorities are trying to establish the “backward and forward linkages” of the network to trace the local dealers and financial backers behind the trade.
