Rahul Gandhi has gone a notch higher to attack Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on grounds of corruption and also requesting the formal investigation of allegations by the Congress party. In a scathing post on social media outlet X, Rahul Gandhi termed Sarma as the most corrupt CM in the country and he charged him with misusing state machinery to go against his political rivals.
The scandal is based on the claims that the Congress leader, Pawan Khera, has made against the Sarma wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, claiming that she had more than one passport. These accusations have been requested to be investigated by the Congress, which claims that transparency and accountability are crucial islets of democracy.
Rahul Gandhi expressed the position of the party, which was to stand by Pawan Khera in the currently pending court case and could not be deterred by what he termed as silence to opposition voices. He also claimed that the Chief Minister has been harassing critics through government institutions and this is contrary to the principles of the constitution.
The remarks come amid ongoing legal developments, as Assam Police has moved the Supreme Court challenging a Telangana High Court order that granted Pawan Khera transit anticipatory bail for one week starting April 10. The order directs Khera to file a petition to the competent court in Assam to seek any additional relief.
The political give and take has also created more tension between the ruling party and the opposition as both parties trade bitter words. As Congress pressures the accountability and investigation, the ruling administration has not yet provided an in-depth answer to the recent accusations.
