While the Polo Grounds in Asansol buzzed with political fervor during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s massive public rally yesterday, a darker undercurrent of organized crime left hundreds of attendees in distress. Amidst the sea of supporters gathered to hear the Prime Minister speak, professional pickpockets reportedly turned the event into a hunting ground, making off with hundreds of personal belongings.
According to preliminary reports, approximately 350 people have filed complaints regarding stolen mobile phones and wallets. What began as a day of political engagement quickly dissolved into widespread panic as attendees realized their valuables had vanished in the dense crowd.
During the incident, some alert people caught the suspects pickpocketing. The arrested suspects were immediately handed over to the Hirapur police station. However, this number is believed to be quite low, while a large number of pickpockets managed to escape by taking advantage of the crowd.
After the incident, when the victims went to Hirapur police station to file a complaint, they accused the police of negligence and procrastination. Many say that the police were initially reluctant to take the complaint, which increased the anger among the victims. One victim said, “Our mobile was stolen. When we reached the police station, we were not heard properly. We had to wait for a long time.”
