During a raid on Karni Jewellers, situated close to the Maa Annapurna Temple in the district headquarters, a GST enforcement team found suspected tax evasion of about 1.5 crore. The night-long operation showed that there were significant differences between the records stated and the actual stock of gold and silver at the premises.

Officials said the inspection was conducted in Chhindwara by an eight-member GST team under the supervision of Lokesh Kumar Lilhare, Commissioner of Central Goods and Services Tax, Jabalpur. The officers carefully reviewed purchase and sales records for jewellery payments, checked the stock records, and audited the business’s returns.

The raid was based on valid intelligence. During the inspection, officials conducted a physical verification of the existing stock and compared it with the amounts reported in official documents. It was found that there was a significant deficiency in the quantities of gold and silver compared with the available records.

The initial estimates put this disparity at approximately 1.5 crore, suggesting the potential for anomalies in the accounting and reporting of tax liabilities. The authorities also suspect that the taxpayer may have understated stock and dealings to avoid paying taxes.

The GST case was serious because it took place over a night. It has been established that an intensive investigation is underway, and legal action will be taken at the discretion of the findings.
