Kerala Police has filed an FIR against X, previously referred to as Twitter and owned by Elon Musk, with regards to an allegedly AI-created video that misrepresented and defamed the Prime Minister and the Election Commission of India.
Officials said the video that emerged on the platform and went viral, is falsely presenting a communication by the Election Commission with a seal of a political party unit in Kerala. The government is convinced that the video could have misguided the voters and destroyed the confidence people have in major state institutions especially with the state heading to fundamental elections in the coming months.
The scandalous 1-minute and 17 seconds-long video caused a wide spectrum of political responses after being shared on the Internet. Police have registered that the content was not taken down on the site when the case was filed, despite concerns raised in FIR.
The cyber wing said that the issue was officially raised in official capacity, even by the Election Commission itself. Investigators are currently looking into the source of the video, the source that was circulating and whether there was any intent to sway popular opinion.
Authorities highlighted that they will take decisive measures against individuals who will be caught disseminating fake or deceptive information, particularly around the time of election. The case puts into focus increasing worries about the abuse of artificial intelligence in the production of deceptive political information and their potential effects on the democratic process.
