Hours before the nomination deadline of March 23, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced its list of 88 candidates to the imminent assembly elections in Assam. The party has resolved to contest 89 seats out of 126 seats with remaining seats going to its supporters Asom Gana Parishad (26 seats) and Bodoland Peoples Front (11 seats). The candidate of Sissiborgaon is not finalised.
Jalukbari will be fought once again by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who has been the sitting MP since 2001. Some of the prominent defectors of the Congress are also included in the list. Bhupen Kumar Borah, a new member of BJP, is running Bihpuria, and Pradyut Bordoloi will face his competition by running Dispuria after taking sides.
Raha and Katigorah have been allotted tickets to other former Congress leaders such as Sashi Kanta Das and Kamalakhya De Purkayastha respectively. But the list has not included another new entrant Basanta Das.
Former assembly speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami has also given the Congress state chief Gaurav Gogoi a fight at his Jorhat seat against the BJP. There are five women candidates on the list and 18 sitting legislators have not been given tickets meaning it has been reshaped greatly.
Dropped senior leader Atul Bora indicated that he might run as an independent or supporting opposition candidate. The announcement of the candidates is an indication of the BJP strategic move since it intends to remain in power in the state.
