An Iftar on the Ganga River has provoked the controversy in Varanasi where 14 people have been arrested. The move was taken, according to the police authorities, because a claim that the group ate chicken biryani at the event, and subsequently dumped food waste in the river, offending religious feelings.
The matter was revealed when one video was posted in the social media platform X, which showed a group of men celebrating Iftar in boats in the Ganga. It was alleged by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha leader Rajat Jaiswal who claimed that the participants had polluted the river and disrespected its sanctity.
Other Commissioner of Police Vijay Pratap Singh affirmed that a case was registered and it is under investigation. Governments have cited various clauses of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, such as that of defilement of place of worship, fostering hostility, creating nuisance to the people and contaminating water sources.
According to police, the gathering had happened on Monday evening and immediate action was taken following the popularity of the video online. Authorities also stressed on the necessity to prioritize communality and adherence to religious feelings, especially in such a spiritual city as Varanasi.
The event has been a source of controversy in the neighborhood, and the government has encouraged people to be responsible and to shun any activities that may disrupt social tranquility or damage culture.
