In the light of the cooking gas availability amid the prevailing West Asia tensions, the Union petroleum ministry on Tuesday made it clear that eKYC using biometric Aadhaar is necessary only to LPG consumers who are yet to undergo the authentication process. The ministry highlighted that this is not a new guideline but an extension of the continuous work to bring order in the process of beneficiary verification and transparency.

There are now over 330 million LPG users in India, of which over 105 million LPG users are under the PMUJ scheme (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana). In the case of PMUY consumers, eKYC is a requirement to get a deposit-free connection and is required to be done after each of their financial years to keep getting the targeted subsidies.

The ministry has made it clear that the non-PMUY consumers who have already done the eKYC previously do not have to undergo the process again. It further allayed the fears of users that the supply of LPG will not be affected by imminent eKYC and that they can easily do the process at their home without any cost.

Authorities emphasized that eKYC would help in eradicating duplicates or ineligible beneficiaries, proper distribution of subsidies, and hoarding or diversion of LPG cylinders. Under PMUY, the government is subsidizing up to nine refills of 300 R per cylinder of cooking gas to enable eligible households cope with increased fuel prices, yet retain the opportunity to use clean cooking fuels.
