The Delhi High Court on Monday gave former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and 22 others more time to present their responses in the appeal of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against their release in the case involving the excise policy. The court has given April 5 as the due date of submissions with the next hearing in the case being scheduled on April 6 before Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma.
The appeal by the CBI is made in opposition to an order of the trial court of February 27 that had left Kejriwal and others without the case. The case is based on the allegations involving the Delhi excise policy that the investigation body believes were irregular.
On Sunday, Kejriwal had gone to the Supreme Court, moving a special leave petition (SLP) and a writ petition in opposition to the refusal of the chief justice of the Delhi High Court to order the case to be transferred out of the bench of Justice Sharma. The SLP has brought the challenge particularly to the March 9 order maintaining a stay on the directive of the trial court that the CBI officer who investigated into the case should be further investigated.
In the proceedings held on Monday, the lawyer of Kejriwal, N. Hariharan and other co-accused counsel representing Arun Ramachandran Pillai and Sarath Reddy sought four weeks to file and prepare their responses indicating that the petitions were still pending in the Supreme Court. Justice Sharma observed that until any order is issued by the highest court, the case will continue according to the law and gave the case a new hearing date of April 6.
