The producers of the film Dhurandhar which stars Ranveer Singh have apparently paid a sum of $50,000 (about 45 lakh) to veteran Pakistani singer Hasan Jahangir to use his famous song Hawa Hawa in the film. The artist had claimed the same after appearing on the Ramadan show Shan e Sahoor on ARY Digital, which was hosted by Nida Yasir.
In the interview, Jahangir talked about his musical career and the fact that his popular song is still popular and it was originally composed in 1986 and released in 1987. He has mentioned that the song has just been used in a large-budget movie that is said to have cost approximately 100 crore to produce and then has gone on to bring in almost 1100 crores at the box office making reference to Dhurandhar.
Jahangir, when questioned whether he was paid by the use of the song replied that the filmmakers had not only sought permission but also paid him to use the rights. He says that the producers had made the correct authorization prior to the inclusion of the track in the soundtrack of the film.
Another subject that the singer touched upon is the issue of the way the practice of copyright has evolved. He said that previously, copyrights on music were hardly acknowledged or followed, but nowadays, film-makers and creators can usually obtain official permission and pay the artist before they can use his or her work.
Jahangir also wrote that it is nice to hear his song that was written decades ago resonate with viewers and be remembered in the contemporary cinema.
