One long time ago, in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, one person was killed and another injured in a landslide that hit a site of a hydro-power project but more than 230 people were rescued after being trapped in heavy snowfall at high-altitude Sinthan Top, officials said on Monday.
The landslide that took place on a late Sunday night in the area of Dangduru by the authorities is believed to have been caused by heavy rains that collapsed the debris in a hydropower project that was under construction. There were two employees who were trapped under the rubble. Rescue teams went on the scene and operated to find the victims. One of the workers was later found dead and the other one dragged out with injuries and rushed to a nearby hospital to seek treatment.
In an other event that was attributed to the harsh weather, dozens of vehicles and passengers were stranded in Sinthan Top, which is one of the major mountain passes that connect Kishtwar in the Jammu region with Anantnag in south Kashmir. The police, the Indian Army and local civil administration engaged in a joint rescue mission were able to evacuate 235 passengers that included women and children amongst others who were travelling in 38 vehicles.
In the meantime, all educational establishments beyond municipal boundaries in Kishtwar and nearby Doda district were ordered closed by the authorities as a precautionary step against adverse weather conditions that were still continuing. According to the authorities, the rescue teams stand ready with snowfall and rainfall persisting in the mountainous area.
