Tuesday afternoon was a hot afternoon in Mumbai and the areas surrounding the city recorded high temperatures and the city began to sizzle. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded an orange alert on Mumbai, Thane and Palghar informing the residents that there was a heatwave situation and should be careful at the best times of the day.

The IMD reports that the temperatures in the area are operating substantially higher than the normal temperatures during this time of the year. The peak temperature in Mumbai is projected to be about 39 degrees Celsius on March 10 with the minimum temperature standing at about 24 degrees Celsius. Authorities have warned that the heatwave situation is bound to continue into the coming days with high temperatures not subsiding during the day.

According to weather scientists, high temperatures at this early month of March were abnormal to the area. In Mumbai, extreme heat normally starts to build up towards the end of March or April. It is an early summer, however, in the city and the neighboring districts.

The IMD has encouraged the residents to exercise sufficient precautions which include but are not limited to staying hydrated, avoiding excessive exposure to the sun and reducing the amount of outdoor activity during the hottest period of the day. Groups of people are quite vulnerable, like children and the elderly, and people with existing health conditions are also especially vulnerable when the heatwave conditions occur.

According to meteorologists, the recent pattern of weather is a larger trend of early-season heat in many regions of western India. Increase in temperature and climatic patterns has led to abnormally warm conditions in the region earlier than is expected. Governments have been keeping a close eye on the situation and will make more warnings in case the situation of the heatwave worsens in the next few days.
