Indonesia has signed a major defense deal with India. Defense Ministry spokesman Rico Ricardo Sirait said on Monday that Indonesia has signed an agreement to purchase the BrahMos missile system from India. Jakarta reportedly signed a deal with New Delhi worth between 1,843 and 3,225 crore rupees ($200-350 million) that had been under negotiation for quite some time.

Sources quoted Rico as saying that the deal is part of a modernization effort to acquire military equipment and defense capabilities, especially in the maritime domain. However, he declined to confirm the total amount of the deal. Neither BrahMos nor India’s defense ministry has yet issued an official response. Jakarta becomes the second foreign buyer of the supersonic cruise missile after the Philippines. The company signed its first deal with Indonesia’s Southeast Asian neighbor, the Philippines, in 2022.

BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles are manufactured by BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, an Indo-Russian joint venture. They can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms. They are a key weapon of the Indian Armed Forces, used by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. During the four-day Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, BrahMos missiles were used to attack Pakistani air bases, cantonments, and other military infrastructure.
