MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday reaffirmed Russia’s “unwavering” support for Iran, as the Islamic Republic navigates a period of extreme internal transition and external military pressure. The statement, issued by the Kremlin, comes in the wake of a massive joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign that has significantly reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.

Congratulating Mojtoba Khamenei, Putin said he was confident Khamenei would continue his father’s work “with honour” and unite the Iranian people “in the face of severe trials.”

“At a time when Iran is confronting armed aggression, your tenure in this high position will undoubtedly require great courage and dedication,” the Russian leader said.

The Kremlin’s rhetoric follows the February 28 strikes that targeted high-level Iranian leadership, an operation the Russian Foreign Ministry previously condemned as an “unprovoked act of armed aggression.” While Putin has publicly called for a diplomatic resolution and an immediate cessation of hostilities, intelligence reports suggest a more active Russian role.

As global oil prices spike due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Russia stands to gain financially, though the conflict tests the limits of its regional influence. By backing Mojtaba Khamenei, Putin signals that despite the U.S. push for regime change, Russia remains committed to the current Iranian political structure.
