Speaking on the developments in West Asia, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday (March 9, 2026) said India remains in favour of peace, return to dialogue and diplomacy. India also advocates de-escalation, restraint, and ensuring safety of civilians, he said.

Making a suo motu statement on the rapidly deteriorating regional situation, the Minister expressed “deep concern” over the widening conflict, which escalated sharply following military strikes involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran starting in late February. Jaishankar underscored that India’s position has been consistent since the onset of hostilities: a push for immediate de-escalation and the absolute restraint of all parties involved.

“We believed and continue to believe that dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues,” Jaishankar stated. “It is also imperative that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states in the region be respected.”

Priority on Diaspora and Energy Security

Central to the government’s briefing was the safety of the nearly 10 million Indian citizens living and working in the Gulf. Jaishankar noted that the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is monitoring the situation daily.

Key highlights of the government’s response include:

  • Evacuation and Travel: Indian carriers planned approximately 50 flights on Monday to assist citizens and travelers transiting the region.
  • Diplomatic Outreach: Jaishankar confirmed ongoing contact with regional counterparts, including a recent dialogue with the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
  • Economic Stability: The Minister assured the House that protecting India’s energy security and trade goals remains “paramount” amid volatile global market shifts.

While the statement was met with slogans from Opposition members demanding a more detailed debate on energy risks, Jaishankar maintained that India’s priority remains the protection of civilians and the prevention of a wider regional war.
