Patna. A major epochal shift is being heard in Bihar politics. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, will formally join the Janata Dal United (JDU) on March 8th. With this news, posters have appeared everywhere from Patna’s streets to the party office, proclaiming “Nishant Welcome,” which read, “The beginning of a new chapter for a developed Bihar.”

Nishant Kumar’s entry into politics is being seen as a potential successor to Nitish Kumar. According to sources, Nitish Kumar made his intentions clear to MLAs and MLCs at a meeting held at the Chief Minister’s residence on March 6th. Such is his level of activity, Nishant has already informally announced his political career by meeting with 24 MLAs at the residence of JDU National Executive President Sanjay Jha.

Possibility of becoming Deputy CM and Home Minister

There’s talk that Nishant Kumar’s launch will be a powerful one. Under the new equations between the BJP and JDU, he could be appointed Deputy Chief Minister in the upcoming cabinet expansion. Furthermore, there’s a strong possibility he could receive a crucial portfolio like the Home Department. This move is being considered Nitish Kumar’s biggest step towards a smooth transition of power.

Immediately after joining the party, Nishant Kumar will embark on a statewide tour. Carrying forward Nitish Kumar’s “Yatra” legacy, he will visit various districts of Bihar, interacting with workers, and gauging the public’s pulse.
This initiative, which began in 2025, has now reached a decisive stage by Holi in 2026. JDU workers are enthusiastic, seeing Nishant as the “new face of development.”
