The Middle East tensions were dramatically escalated following the announcement of the US President Donald Trump that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed in a joint US-Israel military operation. According to reports, the strike was launched in Tehran which is one of the most significant moves in decades of antagonism between Washington and Tehran.
The killing as described by Trump was a turning point to Iran and it gave citizens the only best opportunity to regain their country. He also cautioned that there would be further use of heavy and pinpoint bombing as a continuation of a wider campaign that would see the destruction of the nuclear and military power of Iran.
Iranian state media attested the death of Khamenei, saying that he was assassinated at his office when the strikes were going on. Officials announced 40 days of national grieving and seven days of national holiday. Should he be proved dead, the political authority in Iran would leave a massive vacuum of power in the political system because the Supreme Leader is the one who has the final decision in the clerical and the Revolutionary Guard.
The attacks were well synchronized targeting the Revolutionary Guard command centers, missile and drone launch sites, and major military airfields. According to the US officials, there were no casualties among American forces, even though hundreds of Iranian missile and drone attacks in retaliation.
In the meantime, contradictory reports were made. Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian are alive, had earlier been proposed by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Some eyewitness reports in Tehran talked of the shock and celebration as some residents were reported to have taken to the streets due to unconfirmed reports of the death of the leader.
