Jalandhar. Punjab has a total power generation capacity of 14,500 MW. However, during the four summer months, an additional 3,000 MW is needed. Consequently, Powercom management has approved a new plan. Under this plan, Powercom will purchase 1,000 MW of electricity from small solar power plants.

The purchase letter (60-PSPL/MW NRSE/Solar/1000/2026/ET-9) has been issued. The main objective of this project is to generate electricity from Punjab’s own resources and reduce dependence on coal. According to the plan, private companies can install small solar projects of 2 to 5 MW within Punjab. Powercom will enter into power purchase agreements with them. These plants will be directly connected to the local grid. All plants must be installed within Punjab’s borders. Concerned power generators can submit their bids to Powercom by April 1st.

According to department experts, the installation of these small solar plants will improve electricity supply in rural areas. Since these projects will be spread across Punjab, they will also create new employment opportunities for local technical staff and labor. Building a thermal plant takes three to four years. However, electricity generation begins simply by installing solar panels.
