At least one individual was killed and four others were injured when part of an under-construction pillar of the metro collapsed on the Mulund part of Mumbai on Saturday afternoon, officials said. It happened in LBS Road which is a busy road in the area around 12:15 pm in front of Johnson and Johnson factory and brought panic to commuters and local residents.
Based on the initial reports, part of the parapet, which is affixed on one of the metro pillars being built, collapsed at a high level onto the road below. The debris that was falling is said to have hit an oncoming auto-rickshaw and other vehicles resulting in casualties. Heavy rescue operations were deployed in the area and the injured were taken to one of the nearby hospitals swiftly.
In a previous announcement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had established that two persons had been injured and they were administered first aid. Nevertheless, later reports showed that one of the injured died because of injuries, and four others are still under treatment. Doctors have been keenly observing their condition.
According to the MMRDA, senior officials and metro project team arrived on site immediately after the incident and started their relief and safety efforts. To ensure the safety of the area and to avoid the additional risks, authorities are collaborating with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and teams that are in charge of disaster management.
An investigation should be carried out to identify the precise nature of the collapse, and to find out whether there were safety measures that were lapsed in at the construction site. The incident had a short-term impact on traffic movement in the area.
