Visakhapatnam police have arrested a 27-year-old Hyderabadi software professional who is said to have executed a crime spree through the city to fund an extravagant lifestyle that saw him travelling abroad and acquiring an expensive vehicle.
On Monday, City Police Commissioner, Shankabrata Bagchi, said that the suspected, who was known as Achhi Mahesh Reddy or Sunny, was involved in a series of house break-ins in the last three months. In the process of the arrest, the police confiscated 699 grams of gold ornaments, 3.8 kg of silver items, and a BMW car that was bought using the stolen funds.
The police stated that a number of different police station boundaries had reported burglaries, such as Gajuwaka, Arilova, Malkapuram, Pendurthi, and Duvvada. It was found by law enforcers that the accused had stolen 1,084.94 grams of gold, 6,333.50 grams of silver, and 40,500 in cash, reportedly stolen by the accused across different homes in Visakhapatnam.
After a lengthy investigation by the Gajuwaka crime police, Reddy, who is a native of Kakinada and is at present staying in Madhavadhara in custody. Technical surveillance and local intelligence were used to maintain officers on his movements before they zeroed in on him.
Police claimed that Reddy previously worked with a reputed Indian company in Hyderabad that deals with IT. But in the quest to get fast cash and the luxurious lifestyle, he supposedly left his job and resorted to carrying out burglaries, which he did at locked houses and places with little or no security.
Commissioner Bagchi said that the investigation is still on to establish whether the accused committed similar crimes in other cities. Police are also checking whether some of the stolen goods were thrown away outside Visakhapatnam.
