Election Commission of India (ECI) has requested a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of the electoral rolls in the 49-Tadubi (ST) Assembly constituency in Manipur and the 201-Baramati Assembly constituency in Maharashtra with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date to get registered as a voter.
The Chief Electoral Office (CEO) announced the revised schedule in Manipur on Saturday in line with the instructions of the ECI as stipulated in Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. This is announced a few days after the President’s Rule in the state was revoked and Y Khemchand Singh was sworn in as the new chief minister.
The integrated draft electoral lists, according to the schedule of the ECI, are to be published on February 9. Until February 25, voters are also allowed to file claims and objections and the disposal of these claims is supposed to be done by March 6. The last electoral lists will be released on March 10.
According to the commission, the revision exercise will make sure that the list of voters is correctly made up of all eligible Indian citizens, that is, those aged 18 years or more on January 1, 2026, currently living in the concerned constituencies, and who are not disqualified under law. The CEO of Manipur will be in charge of the process, and District Election Officers and Electoral Registration Officer will be involved with the purpose to provide transparency and accuracy. Prior to the final publication, public notices and advertisements will be done to invite the participation of the people.
In Manipur, the 49-Tadubi Assembly seat in the Senapati district had been lying vacant after the death of the National People’s Party MLA N Kayisii on January 18, 2025. The extension of the SSR is perceived to be a decisive move towards by-election. Manipar has been experiencing a long-term crisis since May 2023, and it has resulted in the loss of human life and massive displacement.
